Obituary

Rev. Walter Quigg, aged 94, made the transition to Glory from his home in Ocean Grove on June 12, 2021. The only child of William and Marguerite Quigg, Walter was born on September 28, 1926 in Delanco, NJ. He is survived by Leona Quigg, his wife of 72 years, his children Mary Pat (Jim) Fuller and Stephen (Gail) Quigg, four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.Walter was a World War II navy veteran, the patron of his extended family, a lover of ice cream, and the author of numerous witticisms and gentle jibes. But his legacy is, and will always be, the multitude of saints and sinners he loved on and ministered to. He did so as a pastor, as the neighbor everyone wished they had next door, and as a committed community servant. His passion for people and for his Lord were evident in all he did and said.It was while serving as a Pharmacist's Mate in the navy that Walter received his calling into ministry. After graduating from Asbury Theological Seminary in 1951, he returned to his native New Jersey with a young family in tow to be ordained as an elder in the United Methodist Church. He went on to pastor churches in Bridgeboro, Pemberton, Rancocas/Masonville, Levittown (now Willingboro), Elmer and finally Ocean Grove. Even after retirement in 1991, he often preached and fulfilled short-term ministerial assignments across the state. He continued as Pastor Emeritus for the Ocean Grove St. Paul's United Methodist Church, a Trustee Emeritus for the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, and honorary chaplain for the E. H. Stokes Fire Company until his death. Mission work was an integral part of Walter's life and he chaired numerous mission committees for the churches he served as well as for the broader denomination. Traveling the world as part of short-term mission teams was a regular and treasured part of his life.A Celebration of Life service will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 80 Embury Ave. in Ocean Grove at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 19. The service will be livestreamed at www.oceangrovechurch.com/watch-and-listen. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to the St. Paul's United Methodist Church or to the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, two organizations he loved dearly and served faithfully for many years.
