“Tank” Santaniello
STEVEN J. Tank SANTANIELLO, of WALL, passed into the next life peacefully on Thursday, August 27, 2010, at home. He was a uniquely understanding and forgiving person who was loyal to the people he loved until the day he died. Born and raised in Neptune before moving to Bradley Beach, Steve was a star athlete at Neptune High School from 1947 to 1951, earning him the nickname Tank. Playing the position of tackle and guard, he was named to both the All Shore and All County football teams in his junior and senior years, as well as being team captain. He was well known for his ability to make yardage while carrying half the defensive team along with him. He was also a member of the golf team and track team, where he performed the shot-put. He moved to Wall in 1967 where he lived the remainder of his life. Steve served in the U.S. Army from 1953 - 1955. After being discharged from the Army, he worked as a longshoreman for several years. As a member of the Newspaper and Mail Deliverers' Union since 1959, Steve worked for Jersey Coast News, Newark Evening News, The New York Times, and Raritan Periodical Sales until his retirement in 1995. Steve coached the Wall Pop Warner Football Team in the early 1970's. He also enjoyed planting his vegetable garden for many years. His family and friends enjoyed the best Jersey tomatoes to be found. Along with his garden, he planted and maintained the greenest lawn in town and received the Wall Beautification Award in 1977 for his Remsen Mill Road home. Steve is predeceased by his parents, Anthony Red Santaniello and Adeline Dolly Santaniello. He is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Lewis, Wall; his grandson, Keith K.C. Lewis, Neptune City; his sister, Joann Santaniello, Neptune; his brother and sister-in-law, Felix and Carmel Santaniello, Wall; five nieces and one nephew. Also surviving is his devoted friend, Joyce MeMa Guidici, and her family, whom Steve had grown to love as a second family. A mass of Christian burial will be offered on Tuesday at 10:00 AM at Holy Innocents Roman Catholic Church, 3455 West Bangs Avenue, Neptune. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Neptune.
