Obituary

RUTH SMYTHE BAILEY, 86, of OCEAN GROVE, died Thursday, May 22, 2008 after a life well-lived. She was born in South Belmar, the daughter of Charles and Maude Smythe. After graduating from Monmouth Memorial Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse, she worked at Point Pleasant Hospital. With the start of World War II, she proudly joined the United States Navy. While working at Saint Albans Naval Hospital in New York State, she met the Navy man who would later become her husband. She also served at Camp Lejeune, N.C., caring for the Marines. In 1949, she married Dr. Forman T. Bailey, Jr., and they subsequently moved to Ocean Grove. They lived there, in the same house, for over 50 years. During that time, she was a long-time member of the Ocean Grove Recreation Commission. Spirited, energetic and hospitable, Mrs. Bailey always loved a house full of people. Her nurturing ways led her to caregiving for the elderly, both family and friends. Her lively presence will be greatly missed. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Dr. Forman T. Bailey, Jr.; a son, William H. Bailey and his wife Barbara of Shark River Hills; two daughters, Carol A. Bailey of Ocean Grove and Barbara J. Bailey of Newport, R.I.; and three grandchildren, Rebekah Bumbernick and her husband Scott, Russell Bailey and Mary Bailey. Graveside services and interment at the Atlantic View Cemetery, Manasquan were private. Friends were invited to call and a memorial service was held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, New York and Embury Avenues, Ocean Grove. In lieu of flowers, donations to Salvation Army, P.O. Box 527, Asbury Park, NJ, or to a favorite charity in her memory would be appreciated.
