Obituary

Richard Fehnel, age 96, of Ocean Grove, formerly of Wilmington Delaware, passed away peacefully on Saturday June 15th in the presence of family. Dick was born in Bethlehem Pennsylvania to Marquerite and Edward Fehnel. As a youth he participated in the Boy Scouts of America and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. After graduating from Liberty High School in 1945, Dick attended Lehigh University, graduating in 1951 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. Dick was elected to numerous collegiate honorary societies. He was also a member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity and served in the US Army Air Corp during World War II. Dick worked for the DuPont Company as a mechanical engineer for 34 years, and then worked an additional 13 years as a consultant with Delaware Technical Community College. He raised his family in Wilmington Delaware but spent summers in Ocean Grove in the tent community. There he introduced his family to the many programs and activities offered by the OGCMA. Over the years, Dick was an active volunteer in Ocean Grove. He was a founding member of the Ocean Grove Tennis Club. He put his handyman skills to work building the two boardwalk clocks, which have survived many storms, and still tick today. Dick was most proud of his 75 years of service as an usher at the Great Auditorium. In addition, he was a member of The First Presbyterian Church at Red Bank. Dick loved all things Ocean Grove, especially the beach and riding the waves. He will be most remembered for his daily 5-mile bike ride. Year round, in any type of weather, he could be spotted on the boardwalk riding his three-wheeler. Dick is survived by his wife of 72 years, Charlotte, his 3 children, Scott, Janis Harrison (Bob), and Susan Lotz (Greg). He is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Dick's wish was to be cremated. A private family memorial service will be held later this summer. In honor of Dick's love of the Ocean Grove beach, donations can be made to the Ocean Grove Beach Foundation, in memory of Dick Fehnel, online at ogbeachfoundation.org or mailed to 20 Benn Lane, Ocean Township, New Jersey 07712. The Ocean Grove Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements.
