Obituary

A farm girl from the coal fields of East Ohio, Leona Quigg died on Saturday October 23, 2021 with her boots on from post-surgical complications. Even at age 94, many would say that she was taken in her prime, for she was as full of energy, drive and spunk at the end of her life as she was when she was born to Floyd and Marie Poole on the family farm on May 22, 1927. In her early years, she would regale friends with tales of life on the farm and adventures on Tony, her beloved horse. This fall, she was telling whomever was interested in listening, about exploits on the jetski or accomplishments on the golf course. But anyone who really knew Leona knew that her faith, her husband, and her family were the cornerstones of her life, in pretty much that order. Walter was the minister of the family, but Leona was the life and spark of every conversation, gathering, and casual encounter. The people living on her block in Ocean Grove came to love her every bit as much as the parishioners at St. Pauls Church. From her humble beginnings in Ohio, Leona moved on to graduate from Asbury College in Wilmore, KY, where she met and married Walter who was studying for the ministry. She followed him to New Jersey where she faithfully served by his side in the churches of Bridgeboro, Pemberton, Rancocas/Masonville, Willingboro, Elmer, and finally Ocean Grove. Regardless of whether you found her cooking dinners, organizing outings, leading Bible studies, headlining talent shows, encouraging musicians, joining a mission team, praying for parishioners, or delivering cookies to shut-ins, she was always loving on people and caring for their needs. Once her children were off to college, Leona expanded her vision to become a cherished and acclaimed first grade teacher. Hundreds of her students went on to accomplished careers, inspired, encouraged, and loved on from the very beginning of their educational journey.Leona is survived by her children Mary Pat (Jim) Fuller and Stephen (Gail) Quigg, four grandchildren , and nine great grandchildren. No funeral would be appropriate for a life so well lived, so there will be a Celebration of Life service instead at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 80 Embury Ave. in Ocean Grove at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 30. The service will be livestreamed at www.oceangrovechurch.com/watch-and-listen for those who cannot attend in person. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to the St. Paul's United Methodist Church or to the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, two organizations she loved dearly.
