JOSEPH J. HOGAN, Jr., 95, of SHARK RIVER HILLS, NEPTUNE, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Taryn needed her Pop Pop in heaven. Joe was born Sept. 15, 1915 in New York City to Joseph and Ella Hogan. Joe enlisted in the Army in 1941 and in 1949 Joe met the love of his life, Vivian, and soon they were blessed with sons, Jimmy and Bobby. Throughout the years, the family was stationed in Japan, Governors Island, and Hawaii, where Joe and Vivian were founding members of the Schofield Sharks Swim Team. Joe retired from the Army after 21 years as a chief warrant officer and went on to serve another 17 years as staff administrator to the commander of the Army Reserve at Caven Point USAR Center, Jersey City. Joe and Viv settled in the Gables section of Neptune in 1963 and were original members of Redeemer Lutheran Church, where he was past church council president, and an original officer of the Neptune Soccer Association. In his retirement, he worked as security for Hahnes, Sealfons and Epsteins Department Stores for more than 20 years. After Viv passed away in 1990, Joe moved in with son, Bob and family and enjoyed sitting around the dining room table regaling them with stories of his youth that include delivering groceries to Babe Ruth, who gave him a $5 tip which was huge in 1932, installing blinds for his hero Lou Gehrig, boxing in the N.Y. Golden Gloves, and playing catcher for the Triple A St. Louis Cardinals. He was a huge Yankee fan and a bigger Neptune soccer fan. Joe was predeceased by his wife, Vivian Cocheo; a granddaughter, Taryn Hogan on June 15, 2010; his parents; and his sister, Kathryn Graham. Surviving are sons, Jim of North Carolina, and Bob and his wife Bonnie, with whom he lived; his cherished grandchildren, Michael, Nicole, Ryan, and Rebecca; his brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Audrey Cocheo of Allendale; his sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Burton Berge of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also Grandpa Joe to the Scherr, Sheehan, Persson, Ryan,and Kelly families. Relatives and friends may call at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Ave., Ocean Grove from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1st. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2nd, with interment following at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls. In Joe's memory, the family is asking that in lieu of flowers, you consider donating to either Redeemer Lutheran Church, 3531 Route 33, Neptune, NJ 07753, or to the Ladacin Network, 1701 Kneeley Blvd., Wanamassa, NJ 07712.
