Glenn, Sr.
John J. Glenn Sr., 88, of Ocean Grove, died Monday November 21 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. He was Fireman with the New York City Fire Department for 34 years at Hook and Ladder 8, the Chiefs Office and Marine 2 fire boat before retiring. Mr. Glenn was a Veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Navy aboard the USS Oakland and USS Fergus from 1942 to 1946. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. Mr. Glenn was a communicant of the Roman Catholic Church of the Ascension in Bradley Beach, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society, an usher, a greeter and a member of the Jerry Lynch Club. He spent many a day at the Ocean Grove fishing pier where he enjoyed fishing and helping with the Tuesday Morning Kids Fishing Club. He enjoyed summer days swimming at the Ocean Township Community Pool. Born in the Bronx, he lived in Manhattan for 39 years before retiring to Ocean Grove in 1985. He was predeceased by brother Robert Glenn. Surviving are his beloved wife of 65 years, Dorothy, his daughters, Maureen Bohl and Patricia Cowan and her husband, James, her son, John Glenn Jr. and his wife Debbie, his sister, Sr. Alma Robert Glenn, six grandchildren, Jennifer Cowan Ellefsen, James Cowan, Allison Cowan, John Glenn III, Chelsea Glenn and Christopher Bohl and 2 great grandchildren Ryann and Robert Ellefsen. Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday November 23 from 2:00 - 4:00 7:00 - 9:00 PM the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Friday November 25 at 10:30 AM at the Roman Catholic Church of the Ascension, 501 Brinley Avenue, Bradley Beach. Committal services will be 2:30 PM in the chapel at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown. In lieu of flowers donations to Meridian Hospice 1345 Campus Parkway Suite A-2 Neptune, NJ 07753 would be appreciated.
