DAVID H. LUKENS, M.D., 91, died on October 10, 2010 in Trinity Hospital in Augusta, GA. He was born in Moorestown, N.J. on February 13th, 1919 to Henry and Jesse Lukens. He graduated from Red Bank High School in N.J. in 1936, briefly attended Moorestown Business School in 1937 before earning a Premedical Bachelor of Arts Degree majoring in Biology from Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana in 1941. He was drafted into the Army in July, 1941. Following completion of Officer's Candidate School he was assigned as the Assistant Battalion Surgeon for 2nd Battalion, 393rd Infantry Regiment, 99th Infantry Division where he served until the end of World War II in Europe. His awards include; the Combat Medical Badge, the Silver Star and Bronze Star and the Belgian Croix de Guerre. Following discharge from the Army in 1945 he attended the New York Medical College in 1946. He graduated in the top third of his class in 1950. He completed his residency at the Jersey Shore Medical Center and established his private practice in Belmar, NJ in 1952. He was appointed an Attending Physician at the Jersey Shore Medical Center where he and Dr. Anthony Rifici ran the Diabetic Outpatient Clinic for a number of years. Dr. Lukens was named a Diplomat of the American Board of Medical Examiners, he was a member of the Monmouth County Medical Association, the American Diabetic Society and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Private Practice stopped in 1973 and he took a position as a Medical Director, with the Mutual of New York Life Insurance Company where he rose to Senior Medical Director and Assistant Vice President at the time of his retirement in 1983. Following retirement he and his wife, Shirley, lived in Pompano Beach, FL. Dr. Lukens moved to Augusta, GA in 2009. His hobbies included music and cooking. Dr. Lukens was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years Shirley H. Lukens and their two sons, David H. and Douglas H. Lukens. He is survived by his son, Colonel William E. Lukens, U.S. Army and his wife, Connie, both of Evans, GA, and their son, Captain Phillip H. Lukens, U.S. Army, Schofield Barracks, HI, daughter-in-law Teresa D'Amato and her husband John of Neptune NJ. and her sons, David H. and Christopher D. Lukens of Neptune NJ, and niece Carole Dalton and her husband, John of Belmar, NJ. Relatives and friends may call at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. A funeral service will be held on Friday at 12:45 PM at the funeral home with interment following at St. Catharines Cemetery, Wall.
