Mendoza
Carmelo Santos Mendoza, 91, of Ocean Grove, died Tuesday September 12 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. He was born in Salinas, Puerto Rico, and was raised in Guayama, Puerto Rico before coming to the United States in 1950. He lived in New York City from 1950-1991 where he met his wife Ruth Phillips. There he made his life and raised his family. Mr. Mendoza worked in the Department of Psychiatry at Bellevue Hospital in New York City until retiring. He was also the custodian to The Second Presbyterian Church and the Night Doorman at 360 Central Park West. He moved to Ocean Grove in July 1991, where he would spend the rest of his life. He was a volunteer at the Neptune Senior Center since 2005. He was predeceased by his wife Ruth in 2003. Everyone affectionately referred to him as Grandpa. He was often seen sitting on his porch listening to music and waving to passerby's. He perpetually had a smile on his face. He was filled with an immeasurable amount of love and joy and he shared it with everyone. Surviving are his daughter, Judy Mendoza and his grand daughter, Tori Timoney. Services will be private.
