Obituary

BETTY GRAHAM, 90, of BRADLEY BEACH, entered her heavenly home on Monday, Jan. 7, 2008 at the MediCenter, Neptune City. Betty was a lifelong resident of Bradley Beach and a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Bradley Beach, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, a member of the Women's Society for Christian Service, and a member of the adult choir. As a young adult, she sang in the soprano section of the Ocean Grove Auditorium Choir. She later joined St. John's United Methodist Church in Hazlet, where she was a member for about 10 years. Betty joined St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Ocean Grove in 1992, and was a member of that congregation and its Adult Fellowship group at the time of her passing. She loved the Lord and always strove to serve him throughout her life on Earth. Betty will be dearly missed by her friends and family. Betty was a graduate of Bradley Beach Elementary School and Asbury Park High School. She was employed for a number of years, including secretarial positions with the Asbury Park National Bank and Trust Company and the then Central Jersey Bank and Trust Company of Bradley Beach. Betty was a needlepoint enthusiast, reader, cook, traveler, and bird watcher. She and her husband Lyman were active members of the local branch of the Audubon Society, the local chapter of NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees) and the Bradley Beach Senior Citizens Club. Betty was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease about nine years ago. Although her mental and physical capabilities steadily diminished as the disease progressed, she continued to enjoy the comfort of living at home with her family. Six months ago, it was necessary to place Betty in the MediCenter of Neptune City. Betty's family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of MediCenter, all of whom provided her with kind, loving care and attention. It was a great comfort to the family to know that Betty was in such excellent hands. Betty's family wishes to thank the Visiting Nurses of New Jersey and Meridian at Home, both of whom sent wonderful aides to help care for Betty during the first six months of the last year. Her family also expresses its thanks to the staff of the Jersey Shore University Medical Center's Emergency Department and 5 Mehandru nurse unit for providing Betty with superior care and attention. Betty is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years, Lyman Graham; her daughter, Bonnie Graham of Ocean Grove; her son, Dale Graham of Delray Beach, Fla.; her brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Ruth Freeman of Albuquerque, N.M.; and her nephew, Chuck Freeman and his wife Lynn of Jamestown, N.M. Friends were invited to call from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Ave., Ocean Grove. A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with interment following at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Alzheimer's Association of New Jersey, 400 Morris Ave., Suite 251, Denville, NJ 07834, or to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 80 Embury Ave., Ocean Grove, NJ 07756, would be appreciated.
