Betty Mae Scarpulla-Smith
Betty Mae Scarpulla-Smith age 89 formerly of Toms River and Atlantic City, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 20, 2016 at Care One in Holmdel.
Betty was born December 21, 1926 in Yonkers, NY. She graduated Yonkers High School and started her career as a Telephone Operator with New York Telephone. She alsoworked as a Health Care Activities Director in New Bedford, MA. before becoming a Pit-Clerk at the Showboat Casino in Atlantic City. Betty is predeceased by her parents; Ernest Burrie and Mary Racek; her husbands, Salvatore Scarpulla and Frederick Smith, her son; Jeffrey Scarpulla and her grandson Thomas Scarpulla, also her sisters, Mary, Rose, Wilma and Eileen. Betty is survived by her sons; Bruce Scarpulla and his wife Karen of Buena, NJ, Brian Scarpulla and his wife Doreen of Toms River and Tracy Scarpulla of Brick, her daughter; Kimberly Scarpulla and her husband Russell Gillen of Manasquan, 11 Grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Kenneth C. Orr, Sr., 76, of Shark River Hills, Neptune, died Friday June 17 at home. Mr. Orr was a code enforcer for Neptune Township before retiring. Prior to that he was the President of Morawes Inc in New York city. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Ocean Grove and sang in the Choir for over 40 years. He was a 50 year member and past president of the E.H. Stokes Company of the Ocean Grove Fire Department, a member of the Ocean Grove Auditorium Ushers and a member of the Ocean Lodge number 89 Free and Accepted Masons. Ken graduated from Neptune High School and then received his Bachelors Degree from Monmouth University. Mr. Orr was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a former member of both the Shriner Crescent Temple and Salvation Army. Ken was also a former Boy Scout Leader of Troop 41, Ocean Grove, and coached soccer for the Neptune soccer Association. Born in Brooklyn, he has lived at the Jersey Shore for 40 years. He was a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather. Surviving are his wife, Marion Orr, his sons and daughters in law, Kenneth C., Jr., and his wife Kristine of Charlotte, NC and Andrew W. and his wife, Shannon of Aston, PA, his daughter and son in law, Meredith R. Warn and her husband Anthony of Brick, his brother, Robert W. Orr and his wife Norma of Calcutta, OH, seven grandchildren, Kathryn, Sydney, Daniel, Caleb, Nathan, Anthony, and Dominic, 4 nephews, Robert, Jeffrey, Timothy and Afton and a niece, Beth. Susan Golding Carolyn O. Carpenter
Carolyn Osborne Carpenter, 84, of Ocean Grove passed away surrounded by her four children Wednesday, November 30 at home. She had worked as a Pathology Transcriptionist for Jersey Shore Medical Center before retiring. Carolyn was a talented artist and her portrait of Ronald Reagan is on display and permanently archived at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California. Carolyn served proudly in the United States Navy during the Korean War. She was a member of the Jersey Shore Artist Guild and she sang with the St. Paul’s Church Choir and the Ocean Grove Auditorium Choir. Carolyn’s great grandfather, John Arnold Osborne donated the corner stone for the Ocean Grove Auditorium. Surviving are her sons Sean Osborne-Lomax and his wife Tracy of Manahawkin, Keith Carpenter of Ocean Grove, Steven Carpenter and his wife Pat of Ocean Township, her daughter Brenda Poland and her husband Steven of Brick. Also five grandchildren, Andrew, Kevin and Daniel Poland and Evan and Tyler Osborne-Lomax. Susan E. Golding, of Ocean Grove, died Sunday June 5, 2016. Susan was born and raised in Elizabeth and moved to Ocean Grove in 1990 to be near her mother and brother. She was a gifted artist, working mostly with water colors in later years. She is survived by her brother Bill Golding and her niece Jacqueline Ann Golding. Susan was kind and loving and will be greatly missed. She requested there be no viewing or service, A private memorial celebration for friends and family will be held at a later date. |

Stephanie Ann Carr, 67, of Ocean Grove, died Tuesday June 7, 2016. She had worked as a Computer Analyst for ATT Bell Labs and then Systems Resource Corporation, before retiring. Stephanie was known for her organization ability, her sewing and cooking as well as her love of cats and gardening. She was a member of the Ocean Grove Historic Preservation Committee. Stephanie’s family were among the early settlers in the Township of Berkeley Heights. She last was a resident of Ocean Grove, but she had lived all over the world. Surviving are her two first cousins, Gail D. Shaffer of Ocean Grove and John Pakusich of San Pedro, CA, her dear friends Connie and Paul Miller and her extended family, the Van Deroef and Deuchar families, Rev. Doris Thompson and her two cats, Footsie and Hazel. Kathleen Jean Prout passed away peacefully on May 23, surrounded by friends and family who treasured her. Kathy was born on July 4, 1944 in Clifton, NJ. She graduated Long Branch High School valedictorian in 1962, earned a BS in Elementary Education at Fairleigh Dickinson University and a Master’s degree in Student Personnel Services at Monmouth University. A teacher for 34 years in West Long Branch schools, Kathy was a teacher who profoundly touched the lives of hundreds of students. She also taught in Harrisonville, NJ and at the Air Force Academy in Colorado. She was predeceased by her parents Abraham and Jennie Ten Hoeve and her brother Kenneth. She is survived by her sister Janice Van Orden, her daughter, Sara Diaz, her grandchildren, Antonio and Adriana Diaz, and beloved nieces and nephews. Kathy was a world traveler and an adventurer who most recently returned from a trip to South Africa with her granddaughter. She founded Prout’s Scouts, a special group of women who created many memories hiking and backpacking together. In her retirement, she continued helping children as a volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocate. She enjoyed spoiling her dog, Darby, and the lucky birds and squirrels who happened upon her feeders. Family and friends are invited to gather from 2-3 p.m. and to attend a memorial service at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home 118 main Avenue, Ocean Grove, from 3-5 p.m. on Saturday, June 4th. |

June Rossien, 98, of Asbury Park, passed on April 11 after a full life. June was born Sept. 5, 1917 and raised in Maplewood, NJ where she owned and operated the June Clark School of Dance. An illness left her unable to continue teaching dance. She always loved the shore and after her divorce, moved with her two young daughters to Belmar. She met and married Leon Rossien and together they owned a construction business. They relocated to Florida in 1971, where June utilized her unique gift of style in her own retail fashion store. For 28 years, they shared good times with good friends in Florida. Following the passing of her beloved husband, June returned to NJ in 1999 to live at the Asbury Tower to be near her daughters, Chervine Lamb and her partner, Brian Ellsworth of Shark River Hills and Melanie Nowlin and her partner Frank Matthews of Loch Arbour. June was an independent, fearless free spirit. When she became unable to walk the boardwalk, she continued to thoroughly enjoy it on her “Cadillac” scooter, regardless of weather. There she delighted in chatting it up with friends old and new from all walks of life until very recently. June was a lover of life who found each day and each new experience to be extraordinary. We will truly miss her. Services will be held at Ocean Grove Memorial Home, Ocean Grove, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove, on Thursday April 14 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. Alfred J. “Freddy” DeSalvo, 75, of West Long Branch, peacefully passed on March 19, 2016. Mr. DeSalvo designed printed circuit boards for EAI before retiring. He was a former member of the IAMA . He enjoyed skiing and camping, as well as bicycle riding and Monmouth Park. He was predeceased by his brother, Richard DeSalvo, his brother in law, Joseph Giacalone and by his parents, Alfred and Lena DeSalvo. Surviving are his wife, Patricia Montuori DeSalvo, his son Christopher of Brick, his daughter, Deanna McNulty and her husband Tom of Ballston Lake, NY, his sister Arlene Giacalone, his niece and nephew Linda and Joseph Giacalone and his grand daughters, Madelyn and Matilda McNulty. Evelyn Harrison, age 87, of Ocean Grove passed away peacefully on March 18, 2016. Born in Kearny, and a life long resident of New Jersey, she had a summer home in Normandy Beach which she loved. Her career path began in banking and she later operated her own dress shop. Evelyn was a kind and loving woman with a smile for everyone. She had the ability to laugh easily at all situations. Her love of the beach and family were her simple pleasures. Evelyn is predeceased by her husband, Robert, son, John, and brother, Harry. She is survived by her son, Robert, his wife, Jan, and their sons, Rob and Scott, all of Wilmington DE and Ocean Grove. She is also survived by her brother, Robert Haynes, and many special nieces and nephews. Evelyn will be sadly missed but never forgotten. Ernest Pascal Zobian, Jr., 77 of Ocean Grove, died March 10, 2016. “EZ”, “Easy”, “Ernie”, “Ern”: Passed away with his children and his companion at his side on March 10th. Ernest was born in Montclair, NJ in 1938 to Ernest Sr and Florence Zobian. He lived in Califon, NJ, Peapack, NJ, Bay Head, NJ and most recent a Ocean Grove, NJ resident for 20 years. A writer, publisher and a brilliant mind. His passions were advocating for the environment, baseball, bike rides, the beach and reading the NY Times. A man about town known for his ever changing array of hats. Ernie was a true free spirit who loved his family. Ernest was a beloved Dad and grandfather to his daughter Alyssa Zobian-Taylor (Boston, MA), son Eric Zobian his wife Cindy and their children Emily and Nicholas (Califon, NJ). Step Dad to Adam Janoff (Wayland, MA) and Josh Janoff (Mahwah, NJ). He will be truly missed by his loving and devoted companion Carol Mennie , his two dear sisters, Lisa Z. Lindahl (Charleston, SC), Victoria Z. John McDevitt, 80, of Ocean Grove, died Monday February 29, 2016 at home. He was the owner of Lojons Jewelery, a company he founded in New York City in 1978 and last operated in Monmouth County. Mr. McDevitt was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving with the Strategic Air Command during the Korean War. He was predeceased by his son, John McDevitt in 1987. Surviving are his son Daniel McDevitt and his life mate Lois Mascitelli. Janet B. ter Linden, 84, of Asbury Park died Thursday February 11, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Wayne. Mrs. ter Linden worked as a secretary for Bel Labs in Murray Hill where she met her future husband, Bill. She was an active volunteer at the St. Paul’s Food Pantry, the Jersey Shore Performing Arts Center and at the Asbury Towers where she last resided. Born in Summit, she lived in Berkeley Heights, Chatham Boro, Whiting and Ocean Grove before moving to Asbury Park. She was predeceased by her husband William and by her son Peter. Surviving are her two sons, Billy,and Richard and his wife Regina, her daughter June A White, her grandchildren, Amber Marrero and her husband Wilfrido, John White, Jr., and Caitlin M. Clark and her great grand son Tristan I. Marrero. John Joseph Nolan III, 80 of Toms River, died on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, NJ. He was a member of Greenbriar Woodlands community. Born in Elizabeth, NJ, he lived in Burlington, Neptune and Toms River. He was a Roman Catholic and worked in the steel business throughout his life. He loved his family, his work and a good laugh. In his free time he could be found at Monmouth race track or enjoying a show at the Paper Mill Play House. John was a caring, witty and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle and friend. He was predeceased by his wife Stella in 2008. Surviving are his eight children, Eileen Nolan and her husband George Cummings, John J. Nolan IV and his fiancé Xuelian (Sammi) Wei, Lisa Nolan and her husband Dan Griffin, Cynthia and her husband Timothy Cannuli, Kelly and her husband William Kaufman, Michael Nolan and his wife Carol, Victoria and her husband Michael Prodeline and Ryan Nolan and his wife Joni. His grandchildren are Brianna, Amanda and Ian Cummings, Grace, Anne and Joseph Griffin, Stephanie and Alyssa Cannuli, Michaila, Riley and Aynsley Kaufman, Michael, Madison and Matthew Nolan, Michael and Andrew Prodeline and Sean, Brendon, Allison and Cian. Evelyn Palmer
Evelyn E. Palmer, 94, of Ocean Grove, died Wednesday February 3 at Francis Asbury Manor, Ocean Grove. Evelyn was born in London, England where she survived the Blitz. She came to the United States in 1945, living in Fanwood, NJ, Ridgley, MD, Watchung, NJ and Manahawkin before moving to Ocean Grove in 1998. Mrs. Palmer was a former member of the Long Beach Island Woman’s Club, the Manahawkin United Methodist Church, the Ballard United Methodist Church and previously sang with the Island Singers. She was predeceased by her first husband Charles Turner in 1984 and by her second husband Clyde Palmer in 1995 Surviving are her daughters, Janet Lynne Charlton of Hackettstown, Gail Lee Koberlein and her husband John of Martinsville, VA and Charlene Joy Christopher and her husband George of Stewartsville, her sister, Kath Turnbull of London, England, 4 Grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. A funeral service will be held on Saturday February 13 at 11:00 AM at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove, with interment following at the Masonic Cemetery, Barnegat.
